What is the hottest game on the market? Right now it is PickleBall. If you don’t know what Pickle Ball is, that’s ok. I didn’t know either, even though it’s been around for the last 50 years.
Pickleball is kinda like tennis and table tennis combined. Each player has a paddle, there is a perforated ball, and a net. You can play outdoors or indoors, and many cities have Pickleball courts that have lighting so you can play day or night. Two to four players can play at one time, but four players are the most common.
There are rules just like in tennis, such as the “Kitchen”. Also, serving is underhand, vs overhand for tennis. The court has to be a certain size, however, if you are playing in your driveway who is going to tell you any differently? Scoring is earned by the serving team only. Games are normally until one team reaches 11 points but must be won by 2 points. Tournaments are to 15 or 21 points.
The non-volley zone or Kitchen is a no-step zone when contacting the ball. This is an area that is within 7 feet of the net. The ball is allowed to bounce one time on each side of the court.
Wheelchair Pickleball
This is a very popular game for those of us that are in wheelchairs. There are some different rules. The biggest difference is that the ball may be allowed to bounce twice on each side of the net. Also, the playing court may be larger than the regular court. During the act of volleying, it is a fault if the volleying player’s momentum causes the player to contact anything that is touching the non-volley zone, including the player’s partner. For players using wheelchairs, the front (smaller) wheels may touch the non-volley zone.
